Stop waiting when the seller has missed the reply time they gave you, or when waiting any longer would risk missing a marketplace buyer-protection or payment dispute deadline. If neither of those applies, give the seller a short, reasonable chance to answer, but do not let the order sit unresolved past the point where you can still open a case.
What to do today:
- Check the order page for three dates or statuses:
- the promised delivery date
- any seller message about when they would reply
- any buyer-protection, claim, or dispute deadline shown by the marketplace or payment provider
- If the seller already promised a reply by a certain date and that date has passed, send one final message and set your own cutoff. Ask for:
- a clear status update
- a new delivery estimate or refund decision
- the exact reason for the delay
- If the order is close to a buyer-protection deadline, stop waiting and open the relevant case now, even if the seller may still reply later. The exact deadline depends on the marketplace or payment method, so check the wording in your account, order details, or help pages for terms such as “dispute period,” “claim period,” “buyer protection,” or “refund request deadline.”
- If tracking shows the parcel is still moving normally and the promised delivery date has not passed, a short wait may be reasonable. If tracking has been stuck on the same status for days, or shows delivery failed, returned, or cancelled, do not keep waiting for a seller reply alone. Escalate through the marketplace or carrier using the tracking number and order reference.
The main trap is waiting for a friendly answer while your formal deadline runs out. A seller message does not usually pause a marketplace deadline unless the platform says it does, so check the platform’s own case-opening window, not just the chat.
If you contact the seller again, include:
- the order number
- the date of your first and last message
- the tracking number or screenshot of the current tracking status
- the promised delivery date, if there was one
If the seller still does not respond, the next step depends on where the purchase is protected:
- If the marketplace has a dispute or refund process, use it before the deadline closes.
- If you paid by card or another payment provider with a claim process, check that provider’s time limit separately, because it can be different from the marketplace’s.
- If customs, the carrier, or the marketplace says the parcel is delayed for a specific reason, ask for the case or reference number so you can quote it in the complaint.
Practical tip: keep one screenshot folder with the order page, the last seller message, and the current tracking status, so you can open a case quickly if the deadline is near.
