What should I do if the return shipping cost is more than the item value and I can't find a local return hub?

Returns & Shipping Costs

If the return shipping costs more than the item, do not send it back yet. First ask the seller or marketplace for a cheaper solution: a prepaid label, another return address, a local return hub, a partial refund, or permission to keep the item.

Start with the return instructions in your order page or seller message history. The key question is who is supposed to pay for return shipping, because that depends on the marketplace policy, the seller’s own return terms, and sometimes the reason for the return. If the item is faulty, wrong, or not as described, say that clearly. If you are returning it for another reason, the seller may still require you to pay the shipping cost.

Do this in order:

  • Save the return offer, the item price, and the shipping quote you received.
  • Message the seller and ask one direct question: “Can you provide a prepaid label, a local return address, or another return solution because the shipping cost is higher than the item value?”
  • Include your order number, photos if the item is damaged or incorrect, and any return deadline shown on the order page.
  • Ask whether they can offer a partial refund instead of a return. For a low-value item, that is often the most practical outcome if the platform allows it.

If the seller gives you only a distant return address, check whether the platform requires you to use that exact address. Do not post the parcel to an unapproved forwarding address or your own chosen hub unless the seller or platform confirms it in writing. A return sent to the wrong address can delay or block the refund.

If the seller refuses to help and the marketplace has a dispute or claim process, open it before the return period expires. Upload the seller’s reply, the shipping quote, and the order page showing the return terms. That is the best evidence that the return is impractical because the postage exceeds the item value.

If you paid by card or another payment method with a buyer-protection process, check the payment provider’s rules and time limits only after you have the seller’s written refusal. Use the seller messages, order number, and shipping quote when you ask for help.

The one fact that changes your next step most is whether the item is faulty/wrong or simply unwanted. That affects whether you should push for a seller-paid return, a refund without return, or a return at your own cost.

Practical tip: keep one screenshot that shows the item price and one that shows the cheapest return quote, because those two numbers often decide whether a partial refund is the better option.
